My pal's band did their album launch at a posh nightclub in Mayfair- I'd never been to one before (and I won't go ever again come to think of it).
Doormen, red rope, a small bottle of beer £18, a very good address, a really nice, trippy-lit ceiling, velvet booths, Champagne in silver ice-buckets- you know the kind of thing.
Although it looked posh I was left with the impression the place was a bit too small for it to be a proper nightclub which made it look a bit mean, like it was someone's business venture where pounds per square foot of real estate had all been cleverly weighed.
My pal's band played to its usual audience then the club started to clear out and the normal punters started creeping in. It was mainly really glum looking obviously rich blokes who looked like they wouldn't know a good time if it bit them on the arse and tall skinny blondes who all looked frankly like prostitutes.
I have to say it gladdened my heart to see this sight. There are a lot of very rich people in London who seem to be a lot more unhappy than us poor lower class scum. I went to a Champions League fixture at Chelsea a few years ago in the very posh corporate section. Loads of glum looking Russians with faces like slapped arses.
Money might make you happy to a certain extent (mine extends to 'can I get the next round in?') but the super-rich seem a mainly pinched, joyless bunch.
Next time you see a really posh car look inside at the driver. It's either an Arab or two driving aimlessly round and round the block to show their car off or (in my case) a bloke driving home to Hampstead looking like a gibbed cat.
